Rattlesden Gliding Club, based in Suffolk and close to Bury St Edmunds, is affiliated to the British Gliding Association.

The club has over 90 flying members and a fleet of both club-owned and a number of club members with their own gliders. The club-owned fleet includes three two-seater and two single-seater club gliders, a tug and a modern winch.

What is gliding all about?
Gliding is an air-sport that is exciting yet graceful. Whether a glider from the 1930's or from the present day, the feeling of freedom plus the amazing views of the Earth are a joy to behold.

The are not many physical constraints to gliding, and you can learn to fly a glider from the age of 14. From the age of 16 you can fly on your own solo. Some clubs are also able to offer flying for disabled pilots, but all aircraft operate within certain pilot payload limits.

For those wishing to get into the air at a relatively low cost, gliding does offer a relatively cost-effective way to fly, or learn to fly.

If you're interested in background knowledge, the UK's Open University offers some short, two minute podcasts about gliders, glider performance, weather and how to stay aloft without an engine..

Where can you find us?

The club is situated on an ex-world war 2 airfield, South East of Bury St Edmunds and West of Stowmarket, Suffolk. A map of our location is here.

If you're looking for gliding clubs in general, the British Gliding Association has produced an online map of all UK clubs. Clubs for the East of England are also available.

Want to drop by and see for yourself?

We welcome visiting glider pilots and the general public by vehicle - information on where we are can be found under site details and contact us details.

If you plan to arrive in a glider (on purpose or otherwise), the site details page has a useful aerial photograph showing local features to look out for.

Due to planning restrictions we regret that we are not able to accept visiting powered aircraft.

If you have not visited an airfield before, there are some safety considerations to know before hand. Before you visit, please take time to look under safety.

Never flown before?
We very much welcome members of the public who wish to have a trial flight and we happily honour British Gliding Association flight vouchers. More details can be found under trial flights.

Are you a Youth Pilot?
Rattlesden has for many years supported the youth pilot scheme which encourages pilots of the future to join in. Find out more about it here.
