SafetyWe welcome old friends and new to the delights of flying. It is also important to know there are some basic safety considerations before visiting any site that conducts aerial activities - whether gliding, powered flight, parachuting, etc.
What to do before or on arrival If possible, ask via any site contact about what is happening and what to do before arriving. They will be able to advise on any local restrictions or local differences that may not be the same as other airfields (e.g. access, parking and so on). All flying is conducted at the discretion of a chief instructor for that day and their decision on any matter is final. When arriving at an airfield, always ask to see the person in charge that day and ask for permission to access the airfield before anything else. This may require coordination via radio to other parts of the site, so do not be in a hurry. Only go where directed by those in charge on the day and when they say it is safe to do so. What to do while on the airfield Apart from having a good time, it is important that as the saying goes safety is no accident. Aircraft, winch systems and other equipment that are part of flying are all dangerous and can be fatal if not treated with respect. When on an airfield, keep a lookout at all times for aircraft that may land take off or land unexpectedly. Gliders by their nature fly quietly and you may not hear one landing. Even at slow speeds, a glider will kill if you are struck by any part of it. Powered aircraft have moving parts that may also be fatal. If you have a car, it must be parked in a nominated car parking area, away from runways and access routes. Be aware that driving a private car on the airfield is classified as "air-side". If at any time you are not sure, do ask a member of the flight team or an experienced pilot or equipment operator. If they are busy, wait until they are able to speak with you (they may be already dealing with a safety critical system and cannot be disturbed). Have fun - but be safe As noted, flying can be one of the best things you may ever do, make sure you have a good time and keep in mind safety at all times. |
